* * * *

Cecil needed to tell Thor precisely what he was going to face once Fabrice found them. He’d never forgive himself for not telling Thor everything and causing his death or any kind of wounds Fabrice might inflict.

“You should know about Fabrice.”

Thor wrinkled his nose. “You already told me about him.”

“I didn’t tell you everything, though. I should have, considering the situation—but everything was a mess, and I was afraid you’d run the other way.”

“You’re not afraid of that happening anymore?”

“I am, but I realize I have to trust you. I don’t have an alternative, and I want to trust you.” Cecil couldn’t remember the last time he’d wanted something so much.

Thor squeezed Cecil’s hand again. “Tell me.”

Cecil sighed. “I told you Fabrice wants my mother’s power. The only way for him to get it is if I decide to give it to him.”

“Something you said you’d never do.”

“I want to think I’d never do it, but Fabrice has been stealing powers for decades. He knows what to do or say for people to give them up, and then he kills them.”

“How does he convince people? How many times has he done it?”

Cecil shook his head. “I don’t know how many people he’s killed over the years. He tortures them until they give him their power, then he kills them.” That was part of what scared Cecil so much. He didn’t think he would be this afraid if Fabrice only wanted to kill him. He wasn’t suicidal, but he’d been running for so long—too long. He was tired. He was terrified of what Fabrice would do if he got to him more than he was afraid of death, though.

“So he could have powers we don’t know about.”

“Exactly. What were you going to say before I slapped you?”

Thor cleared his throat. “Tryg called me earlier, before you got to the gym. He told me your brother has been tearing through Brussels trying to find you. He killed people, Cecil.”

Cecil’s stomach dropped, and he felt like he was going to throw up. He’d known Fabrice wouldn’t stop for anything to get to him. He’d been so focused on saving himself and Thor that he’d barely spared a thought for the people Fabrice was hurting. “How many?”

“Four.”

Cecil was grateful Thor didn’t try to convince him this wasn’t his fault. Logically, he knew it wasn’t. He wasn’t the one who’d killed those people. He hadn’t even been in the same city as them. His brother was the killer, and those weren’t the only four people he’d killed. Even if Cecil ignored the people Fabrice had killed for their powers, he knew how cruel his brother was. Fabrice killed because he enjoyed it—because he wanted to. Even if Cecil had surrendered to him, even if he’d managed to get Fabrice to promise he wouldn’t hurt anyone else, he knew Fabrice would have lied. He probably would have hurt someone in front of Cecil just because he could, and because he knew how much it would hurt Cecil.
